R2D2 on God, 42, the Universe and everything else

Born unclothed, unable to walk, bald and with difficulties in fending for myself, I have managed to pull myself together and overcome such disadvantages. R2d2-small

Growing up I remember engaging in all types of activities which are now frowned upon: climbing trees, stealing fruit, wrestling with the neighbourhood kids, swimming and fishing in the lake and reading my family’s 8 square meters of bookshelves while sunbathing on the no-access roof of an 8 story apartment block in Bucharest.

My first computer had 128 Kb of memory of which 16k where ROM. It was a local spin-off of a Sinclair Spectrum, with a some twists. In contrast with my brother, I cannot say I’ve built it myself. Attending an IT-oriented college with tutors and patronage from the country’s largest cybernetics and data processing centre (IIRUC), I’ve learnt such things as special maths, reverse polish notation, pseudo code, logic diagramming and some machine code – between truancy sessions filled with cinema and beers.
I translated the CP/M OS in Romanian at the late age of 15 (yes, been busy doing all of the above before that) as I wanted to promote the uptake of IT in an inexistent community.

My first x86 PC was a 386 DX at 40 MHz  with 4 Mb or RAM. – Sent in discrete parts by my brother Cristian, from overseas. It had no case – it was spread over my narrow desk (made out of an old sewing machine) on a blanket. Ran such oddities like DOS 6 and WfW 3.11, with tools like telnet, whois and finger. Had a “turbo” switch which I activated by touching the two pins with a screwdriver. Networking ran over 2,400bps mostly to BBS sites that used unusual protocols like Kermit, Z and Y modem. Internet was available in text interface only,  via a dial-up “borrowed” university account. Good old pulse-dial…
Between sessions of programming for fun in dBASE IV, Paradox, FoxPro, C, C++, Turbo C, Turbo Pascal and Delphi, I’ve enjoyed mountaineering and guitar noise.

Here we are 20 years later….when I’ve decided to start offloading stress and anxiety by blogging. And as a social media experiment.
Why God? well, for a multitude of reasons – why are we here?have we created God or has God created us… you know, all the Morgan Freeman type questions
Why 42? Well,  if you have to ask that…
Why the Universe? – we don’t want to limit ourselves, do we now …
Why everything else? As my interests grow or change, I can’t be bother updating the header/description every time…
