Now that electronics manufacturers are releasing more and more smartwatch models, you might be wondering what the authorities’ stance is on using one while driving. Well, this clears things up a bit for our Canadian readers: a man named Jeffrey Macesin was recently pulled over and fined $120 for using his Apple Watch behind the wheel. Macesin told CTV News Montreal that the watch was inside a bag, and that he was only changing songs on it at that moment, since it was plugged into the car radio. He thought the cop only wanted him to get out of the way when he turned the cruiser’s lights on, but the officer obviously thought the device was a cause of distraction.

RANCHO PALOS VERDES — If the Apple Watch has a weakness, it’s the third-party apps. They seem limited in features and functionality. Soon, though, developers will have something Apple has had all along: native access to the Apple Watch’s hardware and functions.

Currently, Apple Watch apps — like maps, the watch face, music and mail — are all written with access to every internal function of the smart watch. Third-party apps, on the other hand, all work through the Bluetooth connected iPhone.

Speaking at Re/Code’s annual Code Conference, Apple senior vice president of operations Jeff Williams revealed that the new Apple Watch SDK, which Apple plans on unveiling at its World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco on June 8, will give developers native access to Apple Watch sensors and digital crown. The Apple Watch has been out for only a few weeks and a security bug (feature?) has already been discovered.

According to a video published by iDownloadBlog, the Apple Watch’s security can be circumvented by performing a factory reset that erases all of the device’s data. The newly wiped Apple Watch can then be set up as a new device and paired with another iPhone.

The Apple Watch is designed to automatically ask for a passcode when it detects it’s no longer on a person’s wrist. But the passcode security is useless against theft if anyone can easily erase all the data and reset the watch without needing to key the code in. Read more…
