R2D2 on God, 42, the Universe and everything else

Good old Microsoft …
If your IIS-based websites suddenly stop working with app pool crashes after patching, check out this:

Basically, reinstall SP2 for W2K3 when running IIS6…
The morale of the story IS, HOWEVER, as per KB notes…

” (This can occur when installing IIS onto a system running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 by pointing the installer to a Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 media location).”

It’s amazing what we learn everyday, regardless of how much we think we know or how long we have been in the industry…

New tricks – sometimes, installed MSI packages (and not just) might report the wrong version. Common scenarios are with re-packaged MSI’s, where the packager (through the repackaging software) decides, in his/her wisdom, to overwrite the built in DisplayVersion value with one of their choice (normally, the internal software control versions). For example, SQL 2005 will not install or even run setup successfully if the DoNet version is not at a particular level.

To get around this, I… Continue reading

On a Windows 2008 Server in an Active Directory 2003 environment, with W2K3 DCs, you get the following error:

Log Name:      System
Source:        Microsoft-Windows-GroupPolicy
Event ID:      1058

The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows attempted to read the file \sysvol\ \Policies\{31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}\gpt.ini”>\\ <domainname>\sysvol\<domainname>\Policies\{31B2F 340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}\gpt.ini from a domain controller and was not successful. Group Policy settings may not be applied until this event is resolved. This issue may be transient and could be caused by one or more of the following:
a) Name Resolution/Network Connectivity to the current domain controller.
b) File Replication Service Latency (a file created on another domain controller has not replicated to the current domain controller).
c) The Distributed File System (DFS) client has been disabled.

When this happens on small environment with single DC W2K3, ensure that, on the W2K3 domain controller, both FRS and DFS services are started. W2K8 machine was unable to read the computer group policy if the abovementioned services where stopped.
