Los Angeles-based Replicated has raised $5 million to build out its service that takes software-as-a-service companies down from the “cloud”, TechCrunch has learned.

The company, which operates under the somewhat contrarian belief that not all services are going to be delivered in the cloud, provides a toolkit that lets software companies offer their products on premise behind a corporate firewall rather than delivered remotely.

Replicated recently launched from beta and will use the fresh $5 million commitment from Amplify Partners and Webb Investment Network to continue its sales and marketing and product development efforts.

OpenStack, the open source cloud computing platform that allows enterprises to essentially run their own version of AWS in their data centers, was founded by NASA and Rackspace in 2010. Today, it’s being used by the likes of Comcast, PayPal, Volkswagen, CERN, AT&T, China Mobile and Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs in the U.K. The OpenStack Foundation’s bi-annual developer conferences now regularly attract thousands of developers and while the project started with only a few core services (compute, storage and networking), it now features six core services and about 60 small projects under its umbrella.

Nathan Copeland is telling a researcher which of his fingers he feels a touch on. But the researcher is touching a robotic hand, not Copeland’s, whose hand hasn’t felt a thing in over a decade.

In this “proof of principle” experiment, a man whose spinal injury removed all sensation from his limbs was able to “feel” pressure on several robotic digits connected directly to his brain. It’s a long way from a cybernetic hand, but it opens the possibility of using one to even more of those who need it.

Now, two caveats:… Continue reading

Serverless offers developers an open source framework that allows them to more easily write applications for platform like AWS Lambda and — in the near future — Microsoft’s Azure Functions and Google’s Cloud Functions. The company today announced that its framework is now out of beta and that it has raised a $3 million seed round led by Trinity Ventures.

The serverless movement that gives Serverless its name is, of course, a bit of a misnomer. The overall idea here is to abstract all of the actual infrastructure away so developers can deploy… Continue reading

After doing heavy damage to KrebsOnSecurity and other web servers the creator of the Mirai botnet, a program designed to harness insecure IoT devices to run massive denial of service attacks, has apparently released the source code on Github.

The compact C code is designed to run on IP cameras and other Internet-connected devices. It tries various hardcoded root passwords, infects the device, and then sends out traffic to a preset target. You can see the code containing the hardcoded passwords in this file called scanner.c.
